Mobility has been one of the assets of the human race. It has been instrumental in the all round progress of mankind. Precise interaction of the body Muscles under the aegis of the Nervous system is responsible for the structural balance of the body. It makes possible the wide range of unrestricted mobility that we enjoy. Much of this important and complicated system is housed and protected by the spinal Vertebrae. Ironically, the same spinal Vertebrae are often the underlying cause of pain, loss of mobility and sensation when they are moved, by a variety of causes, out of proper alignment.

The first vertebra in the neck ‘the atlas’ plays a pivotal role in the aligned and balanced movement of body. Atlas (the first vertebra in the Neck) Orthogonal (at 90 degrees) recognises the holistic influence that the upper cervical (Neck) area has on body function. The Atlas Orthogonal system is a painless and safe spinal correction, which restores body balance and reactivates the body's natural healing abilities.
Roy W. Sweat, D.C., was a 1949 graduate of Palmer College of Chiropractic. He was highly regarded in the areas of research and technique and is the creator of the Atlas Orthogonal Technique, a precise system of X-ray and spinal analysis, which uses a specific method of adjusting the atlas subluxation.

The normal spinal curvature is delegated with the task of proper positioning of the body’s centre of gravity and supporting the legs. Even the smallest degree of misalignment of the spinal nerves results in an abnormally curved spine. If left untreated it can lead to various complications. This is especially true when misalignment occurs in the Neck (cervical spine). Atlas is the top Bone of the spine. It is the Vertebrae that the head sits on. The atlas should be sitting level or square, on the cervical spine (Neck), and the head should be square on the atlas. The atlas misalignment causes a distortion in the rest of the spine due to the complex biomechanical relationship of the head, the atlas vertebra, and the lower cervical spine. The body compensates for the distortion by forming an abnormal curvature of the spine, a long and short leg, a high and low hip,

and Muscular imbalance. The spinal column houses the delicate Spinal Cord. When the atlas misaligns it not only affects your musculo-Skeletal structure, but also affects both the neurological and vascular link between the Brain and the rest of the body.

Specialized X-rays are taken at precise angles in order to accurately measure the misalignment of the cervical spine. They are then analysed and ran through a computerized program to precisely measure the amount of atlas misalignment. The vectors needed to restore the atlas to its normal position are then calculated.
Next step involves treatment with percussion instrument. The arm of the instrument is positioned precisely over the atlas vertebra and a light percussive pulse of energy is delivered to the misaligned atlas, thereby realigning the atlas to its normal position.

The instrument delivers a small percussive pulse of energy directed at specific vectors to treat the spine. Due to the precise and specific nature of the atlas orthogonal protocol, an amazing small amount of force is all that is necessary to restore the proper positioning of the vertebrate. There is no manipulation involved. The procedure is painless, fast, and utilizes an extremely low force.
Immediately following the first treatment, specific X-rays are taken to determine the amount of correction made. These X-rays are like blue prints, which allow the doctor to see initially where the misalignment was and then view the corrections made and plan further treatments afterwards. If your atlas is holding its alignment, then an atlas orthogonal treatment will not be needed on that visit. However, secondary treatments such as therapy may be called for to help with pain or discomfort while you recover.
